Gothic story openings
Sep 25, 2009 · His latest project is a new adaptation of the 18th century gothic horror novel, "The Castle of Otranto," by Horace Walpole, opening in previews Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Oak Brook's First Folio. Mostly known today to college English majors as one of the early founders of the gothic horror genre, Walpole was in his day an admired, best-selling author. This is my fifth attempt of writing a short story (the previous ones are set in the same "universe" as this one). I would like to know if the reader would feel intrigued by this opening. I also wonder if he would feel that it has a "dark" atmosphere. This is the first time I describe so many things in a story.

He uses dark and shady words that add to the spookiness vibe one gets from reading it. The Ushers and their deaths were very mystical and were quite vague which helps emotionally grab the reader.
